The House and Senate passed resolutions by voice vote that urge the governments of Europe and the European Union to designate Hizballah as a terrorist organization. The resolutions cite Hizballah's multiple acts of terrorism over the past 30 years against the United States and other nations.

The House resolution (H. Res. 834) passed on Jan. 1, 2013, and was cosponsored by Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA), Ted Deutch (D-FL), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Howard Berman (D-CA). The Senate resolution (S. Res. 613) passed on Dec. 21, 2012, and was cosponsored by Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Robert Casey (D-PA) and James Risch (R-ID).

Key Points

  1. Hizballah must be further isolated.
The United States designated Hizballah as a terrorist group in the late 1990s. It is time the EU brings its policy in line with the United States to further isolate Hizballah and its sponsor Iran.

  2. Hizballah has carried out terrorist attacks around the world.
Hizballah has a long history of carrying out terrorist attacks against European citizens, soldiers and diplomats as well as Americans and Israelis working and traveling in Europe. It is suspected of carrying out the July 2012 attack against Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

  3. Hizballah has formed a radical alliance with Iran.
Hizballah is a proxy for Iran and is carrying out terrorist activities around the globe at the behest of Tehran and is helping the Assad regime kill tens of thousands of Syrians.
